Morocco, a country rich in history, has witnessed the birth of great dynasties and has lived through some remarkable periods. As early as the 8th century, the first Berber kingdoms were established under the influence of the Umayyads. The Idrissid dynasty, founded by Idriss I, marked the beginning of the Islamization of Morocco.
Over the following centuries, dynasties such as the Almoravids, Almohads and Marinids dominated the political scene, extending their power beyond Morocco’s current borders. The country became a crossroads of cultures, with Arab, Berber and Andalusian influences.
The 19th century marked the beginning of colonial domination. The French protectorate was established in 1912, and Spain controlled the north of the country. Moroccan resistance, embodied by figures such as Abdelkrim El Khattabi, fought against this domination. Morocco finally regained its independence in 1956, under the reign of Mohammed V.
Today’s Morocco retains an unrivalled wealth of culture and history, with cities such as Fez, Marrakech and Meknes bearing witness to past glories.
