King Hassan II, son of Mohammed V, ruled Morocco from 1961 to 1999. Under his reign, Morocco experienced a period of modernization and economic development, while at the same time facing many challenges, notably political.

Hassan II was a strong-willed leader, a skilful strategist and a fine diplomat. He succeeded in positioning Morocco as a key player on the international stage, notably by mediating in Middle East conflicts. He has also consolidated Morocco’s relations with Western powers.

His reign was marked by far-reaching reforms in several sectors, such as agriculture, with the introduction of rural development programs, and education, with the opening of new universities. However, the leaden years (a period of political repression) remain a dark chapter in his reign, characterized by internal tensions.
