Ahmed Balafrej is one of the most important figures of the 20th century in Morocco, playing a key role in the struggle for independence. Born in Rabat in 1908, Balafrej was an influential French-educated intellectual and politician who became a leader of the Istiqlal Party, Morocco’s main nationalist party.
During the 1940s and 1950s, he was a close collaborator of King Mohammed V, helping him navigate negotiations with France and mobilize the Moroccan masses to demand independence. He was also an ardent defender of Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara and led several diplomatic campaigns to make Morocco’s voice heard on the international stage.
After independence in 1956, Ahmed Balafrej was appointed Prime Minister and helped lay the foundations of the modern Moroccan state. His commitment and vision for a strong, independent Morocco remain etched in the country’s history.
