Chrafate is one of Morocco’s most recent cities, located about 12 kilometers north of Tangier. It was founded as part of the economic development plan of the Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima region. Chrafate is designed to meet the growing housing and infrastructure needs in this rapidly expanding industrial region.
The emergence of Chrafate is closely linked to the economic growth of Tangier, one of the most dynamic cities in Morocco. With the establishment of large industrial zones and the Port of Tangier-Med, the region has seen a significant population increase, attracting workers and their families. The need to create a new city became evident to provide quality housing and services.
The Chrafate project was officially launched in 2009, with the ambition of creating a city capable of accommodating around 150,000 inhabitants. The Moroccan government, in partnership with local and foreign investors, invested heavily in creating this city, with a focus on social housing and the construction of modern infrastructure.
Chrafate’s design is based on a well-defined master plan, aiming to create a balanced and functional urban space. The city is divided into several zones, including residential neighborhoods, industrial areas, commercial spaces, and public facilities such as schools, hospitals, and cultural centers. This rigorous planning ensures that each sector of the city is well served and that residents have access to all necessary services.
The construction of Chrafate was carried out in several phases, with particular attention paid to the quality of materials and the durability of the infrastructures. The first residential neighborhoods were delivered shortly after the project launch, and since then the city has continued to grow. Authorities ensured that basic infrastructures, such as water, electricity, and roads, were available from the start to attract the initial residents.
A major strength of Chrafate is its proximity to the region’s large industrial zones. This allows residents to live close to their workplace, thereby reducing commuting time and transport costs. In addition, the city offers affordable housing, making it an attractive choice for middle-income workers.
The city of Chrafate also emphasizes sustainable development. Green spaces and parks have been integrated into the urban plan, offering places for residents to relax and contributing to environmental preservation. Furthermore, initiatives are underway to promote the use of renewable energies and to improve the energy efficiency of buildings.
Connectivity is another key aspect of Chrafate. The city is connected to Tangier and other cities in the region by a modern road network, facilitating residents’ travel. In addition, public transport development projects are underway to further improve mobility and reduce dependence on private cars.
Chrafate represents an example of success in terms of urban planning and economic development. It meets the needs of the growing population of the Tangier region while offering a modern living environment and economic opportunities. With its quality infrastructure and commitment to sustainable development, Chrafate is well positioned to become a major urban center in the region.
