| Al Hoceima (Amazigh languages: Villa or Lhusima) is a city in northern Morocco located at the northern end of the Rif mountains and on the Mediterranean coast. Al Hoceima is the capital of the Taza-Al Hoceima-Taounate region. It is located on the territory of the Ayt Weryaghel and Ibeqquyen tribes of the Rif, who speak the Tarifit Berber language, locally called tamazight. The city’s income is based on tourism and fishing. Many of its former inhabitants migrated to Europe between the 1960s and 1980s; a large number of Moroccans in the Netherlands were originally from Al Hoceima. They return to Al Hoceima during the summer, boosting its economy and encouraging investment. Al Hoceima is one of the most beautiful cities in northern Morocco. It is better known by the charming nickname « the pearl of the Mediterranean ». It is likely nicknamed this for its bays, each more beautiful than the last, bathed in turquoise waters and with cliffs that plunge into the vast blue of the Mediterranean. This Moroccan city has a Spanish influence, as it dates back to the years of the Rif War in the first quarter of the 20th century, when some Spaniards landed and named it Villa Sanjurjo. The landing at Al Hoceima was a military landing carried out on 8 September 1925 during the Rif War by the Spanish army with the help of the French fleet and aviation in the bay of Al Hoceima, in northeastern Morocco.
