The Zayanes are a Berber tribe from the Middle Atlas region, living mainly around the town of Khénifra. Known for their warrior spirit and love of freedom, they distinguished themselves in the battle of Elhri against French colonial forces in 1914, under the leadership of the famous chief Mouha Ou Hammou Zayani.
The Zayanes ‘ way of life is closely linked to the mountains. They farm and raise livestock, exploiting the region’s natural resources to meet their needs. Their farming traditions are based on ancestral techniques handed down from generation to generation.
Zayane customs are also marked by a rich tradition of craftsmanship, notably in carpet weaving and woollen garments. Their local festivals, such as the Moussem de Mouha Ou Hammou Zayani, are gatherings where the tribe’s history and culture are celebrated through dances, songs and equestrian competitions.
The Zayanes are protectors of Berber mountain culture, with a long history of resistance and traditions rooted in their natural environment.
