The tourism industry in Morocco accounts for a significant share of the country’s economy. It represents nearly 7% of GDP. Jobs directly related to Moroccan tourism amount to more than 5% of total employment. The tourism industry is not negligible; it corresponds to over 500,000 jobs in Morocco.
But there is more than the economic factor; tourism helps highlight Morocco’s rich culture. Indeed, through visits, stays and encounters in Morocco, this tourism has helped make Morocco known around the world not only as a country of magnificent landscapes but also as an ancient kingdom with a vast history.
Moroccan craftsmanship is renowned worldwide; their ancestral knowledge of leather, metal, wood, embroidery… is recognized around the world and highly appreciated. Many major global monuments call on Moroccan artisans to create decorative work, such as the Sheikh Zayed Mosque in Abu Dhabi. The reputation of Moroccan artisans is well established.
The Kingdom of Morocco offers a variety of landscapes and places to visit such as the desert, the Atlas Mountains, beaches on the Mediterranean and Atlantic coasts. There are various monuments and sites to visit, like the Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca, the Koutoubia Mosque in Marrakech as well as its grand palaces (the Badi and Bahia palaces), the Ouzoud waterfalls, the Hercules Caves in Tangier…
On the global tourism scale, Morocco ranks 29th; it aimed to reach 20th place in 2020, but unfortunately COVID decided otherwise.
Nevertheless, Morocco is a major and much-appreciated tourist country that welcomes visitors and offers a great deal of attractiveness.
