Mohammed V, born in 1909, is undoubtedly one of the most important figures in 20th-century Morocco. He was the king who led his country to independence, after decades under the French protectorate. Mohammed V was a charismatic figure who rallied Moroccans around the cause of freedom and national unity.
During his reign, he defended the interests of his people against the colonial administration, making courageous decisions. The most striking moment of his reign was undoubtedly his exile in 1953 by the French colonial authorities, which sparked off a vast popular protest movement in Morocco. His triumphant return in 1955 marked the beginning of the end of the French protectorate and the advent of independence in 1956.
In addition to his role in bringing about independence, Mohammed V is also credited with laying the foundations for Morocco’s modernization. He initiated numerous reforms in education, the economy and infrastructure, while preserving the country’s Islamic identity.
