ABAYA
The abaya is the garment worn “over other clothes” by Muslim women. It is the “traditional” form of the hijab or of the modest Islamic dress.
This outfit is either a large square of fabric draped from the shoulders or the head or a long robe.
It covers the body without covering the face, the feet, or the hands. It can be worn with a hijab in different ways.
It is a robe often used as prayer attire.
Indeed, it covers the entire body and is loose; it is a very commonly worn outfit among Muslim women. The same garment is found among ‘nuns’, who also wear a long robe composed of a veil that entirely covers the body and leaves only the face visible.
Its wearing is mandatory in Saudi Arabia and in the countries of the Persian Gulf, but it is not mandatory in the rest of the Middle East (Lebanon, Syria, etc.) nor in the Maghreb (Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya etc.).
