Situated in the heart of the medina of Fes, the Al Quaraouiyine mosque is one of the oldest and most prestigious in the Muslim world. It is the result of the vision and determination of an exceptional woman, Fatima al-Fihriya, who devoted her fortune and energy to building this religious and intellectual edifice that would become a symbol of the golden age of Islamic civilization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Born in Kairouan in Tunisia in the 9th century, Fatima al-Fihriya came from a wealthy and cultured family. After moving to Fes with her family, she decided to devote her fortune to the construction of a mosque and a center of knowledge that would be accessible to all\u2014men and women, rich and poor, locals and foreigners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The construction of the Al Quaraouiyine mosque began in 859 and was completed in 863. Over the centuries, it was expanded and embellished, becoming a leading center of education in the fields of theology, jurisprudence, medicine, philosophy, and the sciences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Al Quaraouiyine attracted scholars and students from across the Muslim world and beyond, who studied, taught, and wrote works there that shaped the intellectual and religious life of Morocco and of Islamic civilization as a whole. Even today, Al Quaraouiyine is a world-renowned center of knowledge and education, with a library rich in thousands of manuscripts and rare books.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
