This confrontation, which pitted the forces of the <strong>Sultan Moulay Hafid and the rebel tribes of Marrakech<\/strong>, illustrates the country&#8217;s internal tensions at <strong>the dawn of the French protectorate<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the beginning of the twentieth century, <strong>Morocco<\/strong> was beset by growing instability, exacerbated by foreign pressures and internal rivalries. <strong>Sultan Moulay Hafid<\/strong>, who had ascended the throne in 1908 after deposing his brother <strong>Moulay Abd al-Aziz<\/strong>, faced fierce opposition from the <strong>tribes of the Atlas and the Souss<\/strong>, who refused to recognize his authority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Battle of Marrakech was triggered by a revolt of these <strong>tribes<\/strong>, led by influential chiefs who saw <strong>Moulay Hafid<\/strong> as an illegitimate ruler, too close to European powers. The rebels succeeded in seizing the city of Marrakech, one of the kingdom&#8217;s most important cities, forcing the Sultan to intervene to regain control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The siege of Marrakech lasted several weeks, during which the Sultan&#8217;s forces, supported by mercenaries and foreign troops, attempted to dislodge the rebels. The fighting was violent and caused many casualties on both sides. Ultimately, <strong>Moulay Hafid<\/strong> managed to retake <strong>Marrakech<\/strong>, thus consolidating his power, but at the cost of severe repression and a general weakening of the kingdom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The consequences of the Battle of Marrakech were profound. Although Moulay Hafid succeeded in restoring his authority, this victory was short-lived. In 1912, Morocco signed the <strong>Treaty of F\u00e8s<\/strong>, instituting the <strong>French protectorate<\/strong>, which placed the country under French tutelage.
